As time passes a company may change its logo to keep up with the current time and trends. This is very evident in company’s that have been around for a long time such as Windows who have been around since the 70’s and developed there logo significantly since then however I personally think that they have reverted back to they’re design in the latest design for the release of windows 10; Getting rid of the use of the wavy window to opt for the original shape.
What makes good or bad logo’s?
I’m now going to show you a selection of good and bad logos and explain why I think they are in either category.
Bad logos
Well this one….What can I say except did anyone look at this before it was printed. It generally comes under what kind of mind you have and whether you see that as a computer mouse of a phallic object. However putting aside the obvious visual disadvantage the use of the mouse in replace of the letter U isn’t the best as it doesn’t really look like a U at all. And the general layout is just a bit boring in my opinion.
Cobra Pest control? http://www.cobrapest.com/ The company name confuses me as it does not have anything to do with cobra’s. Unlike the title suggests do not call this company if you have a snake problem and I looked they don’t use snakes either to remove pests like rats so why they chose the name is beyond me. And if you can forgive them for their name you cannot forgive them for the dodgiest picture of a cobra I have ever seen! I honestly believe if you asked a child to draw one you would get a better result. Cobra pest control have since updated they’re logo and even though it is more identifiable that it is a snake and not a worm, it still has nothing to do with a pest control business that only deals with bugs and design wise isn’t very adventurous.
Now this would be good if it weren’t for the fact it looks like someone is being kidnapped. The font is soft and the bubble effect does connote safety. However the image of what I assume is supposed when you first look to be people hugging does not actually seem like it.
Good logos
The logo for the Olympic Games is well known throughout the world simply composed of five interlocking rings, coloured blue, yellow, black, green, and red on a white background. The symbol was originally designed in 1912 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, co-founder of the modern Olympic Games. According to Coubertin, the ring colours with the white background stand for those colours that appeared on all the national flags that competed in the Olympic games at that time. Upon its initial introduction, Coubertin stated the following in the August, 1912 edition of Olympique:
- “…the six colors [including the flag’s white background] thus combined reproduce the colors of all the nations, with no exception. The blue and yellow of Sweden, the blue and white of Greece, the tri- colors of France, England and America, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Hungary, the yellow and red of Spain next to the novelties of Brazil or Australia, with old Japan and new China. Here is truly an international symbol.”
This is the logo for Batman. What makes this logo good is it’s simple and represents the iconography of batman. The image of the bat silhouetted on a background of yellow in an oval shape is taken from the bat signal where in the traditional story a projection of a bat was lit into the sky if batman was needed.
